In terms of sweating, there's nothing quite like a 20-minute sauna session.  The heat helps to relieve sore muscles and improves your overall health and well-being after you've finished.  You'll feel more relaxed and rested after you've finished.  For those who are uncomfortable with the high temperatures of a traditional sauna, an infrared sauna may provide the same benefits as a sauna without intense heat.

What is an infrared sauna, and why should you use one?.
At the same time, infrared saunas do not heat the air around you like a traditional sauna does.  An alternative is to use infrared lamps to heat your body directly, as opposed to using heat lamps.  This type of sauna uses infrared panels, rather than conventional heat, to penetrate human tissue more easily, warming your body before heating the air.  Traditional saunas typically operate at temperatures between 150 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas an infrared sauna can operate at temperatures as low as 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.  According to the manufacturers, only about 20% of the heat produced in an infrared sauna is used to heat the air, with the remaining 80% being used to directly heat your body.  Proponents of infrared saunas claim that the heat penetrates deeper into the body than heated air does.  A more intense sweat can be experienced while the temperature is kept lower.  According to Eisenstadt, this environment is more tolerable, allowing you to stay in the sauna for a longer period of time while increasing your core body temperature by two to three degrees Celsius.

Several people will go to a health club, spa, or doctor's office to receive infrared sauna treatments, while others will purchase and construct their own in their own homes.  You should be aware that infrared saunas do not come with comprehensive operating instructions if you decide to give them a try.

Even though there are some general guidelines to follow, how you use an infrared sauna is ultimately entirely up to your personal preference.  Here are a few pointers to help you get started on your journey.

- Make sure to drink plenty of fluids! Before entering an infrared sauna, make sure you're properly hydrated.  Before your session, drink a glass of water.  In addition, if you are sensitive to high temperatures, you can bring water into the sauna to cool yourself down.
- The temperature can be selected.  Generally speaking, the average temperature for an infrared sauna is between 100 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit, with beginners beginning at the lower end and more experienced users at the higher end.  To begin, set the temperature to 100 degrees Fahrenheit if this is your first time.  Perhaps you'd like to keep the temperature at this level for a couple of sessions? It is possible to raise the temperature incrementally throughout the session until you reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
